“Journalism can never be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault. It must speak, and speak immediately, while the echoes of wonder, the claims of triumph, and the signs of horror are still in the air, according to Henry Anatole Grunwald.

“Walter Lippmann said, there can be no higher law in journalism than, to tell the truth, and to shame the devil.

“Tan Hongkai also opined that; I think journalism anywhere should be based on social justice and impartiality, making contributions to society as well as taking responsibility in society. Whether you are capitalist or socialist or Marxist, journalists should have the same professional integrity.

“No Matter your status you can’t silence a journalist. #freeelzaharadeenumar.”

Katsina State has a history of Illegally arresting and intimidating journalists.

President Buhari’s Reputation As A Democrat Won’t Change If He Doesn’t Sign Electoral Bill – Femi Adesina

Presidential aide, Femi Adesina has said that the reputation of the President as a democrat won’t change if he doesn’t sign the recently passed amended electoral bill.

This is coming amid the controversy trailing the inclusion of the direct mode of primary for political parties in the bill.

Reacting to the controversy in an interview on Channels Television, Adesina said Buhari’s reputation as “somebody who wants to leave clean elections for Nigeria has already been made whether the electoral act is signed or not”.

He said;

“In terms of his image for democratic value, that image is made already. It is almost cast in concrete. You will find that one election after the other has been better under President Buhari.

“Under President Buhari, the governing party has lost — states, legislative seats and so many elections.

“It didn’t used to be. It used to be that whichever party was in power won all elections before by hook or crook; not under President Buhari.

“So, his reputation as somebody who wants to leave clean elections for Nigeria has already been made whether the electoral act is signed or not. It doesn’t distract from that reputation.”

Insurgency, Banditry Caused By Deplorable State Of Army Barracks – Senate

The Senate has attributed the poor state of Army barracks across the country to the ongoing wars against insurgency and banditry.

The Senate Committee on the Army stated this after it visited some military formations in Plateau and Bauchi states to carry out some oversight activities.

The Chairman of the Senate panel, Senator Ali Ndume, told journalists after the visit that money that should have been used to fix the barracks were being paid as allowances to the personnel who are participating in the wars against insurgency and banditry.

He said efforts would be made by the two chambers of the National Assembly to ensure that more money is appropriated for the renovation of old barracks as well as possible construction of new ones.

He said, “We went on oversight activities to see the conditions of the barracks as well as assess the implementation of the 2021 budget of the Army regarding some capital projects.

We assessed the implementation of the 2021 budget meant for the renovation of old structures in the barracks and the new ones being built.

“We are impressed about the quality of the jobs done and the speed at which they are being delivered.

“The conditions of the barracks is deplorable. The parameter fencing, the road network and the walls of the buildings are all dilapidated and they need complete rehabilitation or even reconstruction

“The Nigerian Army is being involved in activities that are not its primary responsibilities.

“The Nigerian Army is combatant and it is used to fighting conventional wars.

“They are now involved in duties that should ordinarily be handled by the police or other security agencies. Despite that, the Nigerian Army is doing its best.

“Too much funds are going into the various operations especially with the insurgency in the North East, banditry in the North West and instances of farmers-herders clashes as well as other tribal crisis.

” It is unfortunate that the Nigerian Army for a long time has not been properly taken care of.

“The condition of the barracks are bad because they are not being maintained while much money is going into operations.

“The money needed to fix the barracks is enormous and government should approve more funds to the Nigerian Army.

” There are no new barracks being built and the existing ones are not being maintained.

“The army is engaged in various operations and the non-regular allowances that are being paid is enormous.

“So much money is going into the payment of allowances that could have been avoided if the nation is at peace. Such money would have been used to fix the barracks.”

Igbo Traders Petition CBN On Multiple Charges, Deductions By Banks

Igbo traders under the auspices of the South East Amalgamated Markets Traders Association (SEAMATA) has sent a Save Our Souls (SOS) to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) lamenting of multiple and indiscriminate charges and deductions on customers by commercial banks in the country.

In an open letter addressed to the CBN Governor, Dr Godwin Emefiele, provided to reporters in Enugu on Monday, the traders complained that the financial oppression depositors and account operators were going through have become unbearable.

They said, “We are directed to formally bring to your notice the indiscriminate act of financial oppression which our members and all depositors and operators of bank accounts experience on a daily basis from commercial banks through indiscriminate charges and deductions.”

It said that most of the transactions are the social responsibility of the banks, adding that the banks make deductions and charges for virtually every transaction ranging from deposits to even confirmation of signature.

According to the traders, most of the transactions the banks charge the customers were the social responsibility of the banks, decrying that the banks make deductions and charges for virtually every transaction ranging from deposits to even confirmation of signature.

SEAMATA’s letter which was signed by Chief Gozie Akudolu and Mr Alex Okwudiri, President-General and Secretary respectively, reads in part, “Part of the major responsibilities of the commercial banks, we know, is to accept money deposits from customers and keep safe custody of the same and perform such other transactions for and as directed by the customer through various bank instruments.

“Most of the transactions, we also know, are the social responsibility of the banks. But today, the banks make deductions and charges for virtually every transaction ranging from deposits to even confirmation of signature.

“The cashless economy policy of the CBN has been of immense benefits to our members especially as it curtailed to the barest minimum armed robbery attacks of our members, leading to loss of fortunes and even lives. However, today, nobody carries huge cash again on business trips.

“The commercial banks are turning themselves into becoming “sippers” to bank customers through the indiscriminate charges and deductions especially in online transactions.

“When a customer makes an online transfer of funds, the transferor is charged a certain amount of money deducted from his/her account and the recipient’s account is also charged and deductions made for receiving the money.

“In addition, charges and deductions are also made for SMS, which most of the time were not received. Finally, at intervals, charges and deductions will be made on the same account as the service charges.

“Sir, the banks are pressing our necks real hard and we are financially choking. Our members had individually approached the banks to complain but without success.

“Our only alternative is to bring our plight and indeed, the plight of all bank customers to your knowledge and most humbly and respectfully appeal that you prevail on the banks to please have compassion on the customers and stop forthwith the indiscriminate charges and deductions and if possible, refund all the deductions.

“The association has decided to go through your office for the resolution of this matter instead of besieging the bank offices with protesters which is far from what our nation needs now.”

While commending the CBN boss for good works in the proper management of the nation’s monetary policy and regulation of the operations of the commercial banks in the country, the Igbo traders expressed their strong belief in his ability, strong commitment and will-power in the successful resolution of their complaint.

FG, Stakeholders Reject Bill Seeking To Prohibit Open Defecations

The ministries of finance and environment and other stakeholders in the environment sector on Monday rejected a bill that seeks to prohibit open defecation and urination in the country.

The bill titled: “Clean Nigeria Agency (Establishment) Bill, was sponsored by Senator Clifford Ordia (PDP Edo).

The ministries and other critical stakeholders spoke against the piece of legislation at a one-day public hearing on the bill organised by the Senate Committee on Water Resources at the National Assembly, Abuja.

They said it was unnecessary to establish a new agency to fight open urination and defecation in a country with an estimated 46 million people with no access to toilets.

In his opening remarks, Chairman, Senate Committee on Water Resources, Senator Bello Mandiya (APC, Katsina), noted that there was an urgent need to eradicate open urination and defecation in the country because of their adverse effect on the environment and health of the people.

Mandiya said: “This Bill seeks to create an agency to prohibit open urination and defecation in the country.

“This is very clear because we know what this causes.

“Unfortunately for this purpose, Nigeria is among the highest if not the highest country practising open defecation.

“So there is a need to do everything possible to eradicate it.”

Senator Ordia, in his presentation, said the bill seeks to make rules and issue guidelines and regulations for the construction and operations of public toilets.

He said the agency, when established, would certify public toilet facilities to be fit for use by members of the public.

He also said the agency would have powers to shut down any public place that does not meet the required standard of public toilet facility prescribed by the agency, among others.

However, the Director of Legal Services, Ministry of Environment, Mrs Obayagbo Helen, said the ministry was opposed to the passage of the bill.

Obayagbo said: “Creating an agency for a fragment of one component of sanitation would mean creating more than 15 agencies for sanitation issues alone.

“This would mean wastage of scarce government resources. Besides, there are too many federal government agencies in existence currently and most of them self-sustaining but depend on the already very thin resources of the Federal Government.”

The Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, represented by its Assistant Director, Legal, Mrs Ate Amali, said there were agencies of government already performing roles being envisaged for the proposed agency.

The National President, Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN), Mr Jamilu Shuaibu, said the bill was inconsistent with the provisions of the fourth schedule of the 1999 constitution as amended.

He said the constitution vested the local government councils with the role of maintenance and regulations of public convenience.

He said the 774 local government areas have been implementing the role through their environmental health services department and units.

Shuaibu said the agency if established, would be an additional liability and additional cost of governance.

He, however, recommended that the relevant Federal Government Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) responsible for environmental sanitation be empowered to produce a national policy with corresponding guidelines in toilets and urinals in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

He also recommended that existing agencies in the federal, state and local governments should be strengthened to perform their functions more effectively.

Dowen College: Family Hires Femi Falana Over Sylvester Oromoni’s Death

After petitions addressed to the Nigeria police force (NPF), the family of the late 12-year-old Dowen College student, Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, has hired the firm of a foremost human rights lawyer and activist, Femi Falana, to prosecute the case against the institution over the unfortunate death of their son.

The lawyer has, therefore, written to the office of Lagos State’s chief coroner, requesting an inquest into the circumstances leading to the death of his client’s child.

Newslead had earlier on Monday reported the insistence of the deceased’s father, Sylvester Oromoni Snr, that his son was bullied to death, even as he lamented the attitude of the school management to the development.

Lawyer’s letter

The letter, which was dated December 6, 2021 and signed by Taiwo Olawale, a copy of which was obtained by this newspaper, was specifically addressed to the chief coroner, high court of Lagos State.

Entitled; “Request for Inquest into the Tragic Death of Sylvester Oromoni killed at Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos,” noted that based on the briefings by the family, the late student died as a result of injuries allegedly inflicted on him by his seniors at the school.”

The letter reads in part: “Given the needless death of Sylvester Oromoni, we are compelled to request you to use your good offices to cause a coroner’s inquest to be conducted into the cause of death of this young and promising boy and make appropriate recommendations pursuant to Section 15 of the Lagos State Coroner’s Law 2007 that states that an inquest shall hold whenever a coroner is informed that the death of a deceased person within his coroner district is as a result of a death in a violent, unnatural or suspicious situation.

“We hereby request your lordship to conduct an inquest into the circumstance surrounding this tragic death and we are confident that your lordship will accede to our request with utmost urgency.”

NDLEA Reacts To Alleged Assault On Reality Star, Khloe

Hours after former BBNaija housemate, Abiri Oluwabusayo Khloe accused an official of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, of assaulting her, the agency has released a statement, denying the allegation.

The reality star had taken to social media to claim that she was assaulted by a staff of the agency at the airport, adding that the officer harassed her and seized her phone, called her a bastard and made her miss her flight.

Responding to her allegations Director, Media & Advocacy of the agency, Femi Babafemi, in a statement said;

“its preliminary findings showed that none of its officers assaulted an Air peace airline passenger, Ms. Abiri Oluwabusayo Khloe, at the departure gate of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja Lagos in the early hours of today, Sunday 5th December,”

“The passenger had in social media publications alleged a female NDLEA officer harassed and assaulted her. While further investigation of the allegation is ongoing, the following facts have so far been established: At about 12:20am on Sunday 5th Dec, during an outward clearance of passengers going to South Africa by Air peace, a female passenger, Ms. Abiri Oluwabusayo was asked to submit her luggage for a search, which is a regular procedure.

“In the course of searching her luggage, which contains about 8 handbags, Ms. Abiri who obviously came late for the flight as shown on CCTV footage became agitated and hurled a number of unprintable insults at the female officer searching her luggage. This attitude is naturally a red flag that would raise suspicion and equally taken as an attempt to distract the officer.

“Ms. Abiri went further to point fingers in the face of the officer and at the same time pulled out a phone to record the officer in the course of doing her work. At that point, the officer seized the phone from her to stop the distraction but that didn’t stop the passenger who brought out another phone to record their encounter.

“The aggrieved passenger and the public are assured that the NDLEA is a law enforcement agency that upholds discipline among its officers and men, and as such will take further steps to investigate any other evidence made available in the course of the ongoing process.”
